Hi,

I really need your help. I just got an MBA degree from a normal university in US. I really want to work in a PE/VC. Current i have a part time job in a new boutique PE firm. Before MBA, i worked in a consumer electronics corporation. I am from china, now i am in US. I can work both in US and China. For my case, how can i switch my career to PE/VC industry? thank you!

Getting into private equity/venture capital is highly competitive, but if you can differentiate yourself and target roles that leverage your strengths you stand a significantly better chance of gaining entry. In your case, your languages and cultural experience in both the US and China will help generate interest from firms where this is relevant. You didn’t mention your MBA school, but the brand will be important, and if you have a high (700+) GMAT score it is worth mentioning this on your CV as well. In addition to your academic and geographic background, your work experience will be important too. Usually, PE and VC firms require 2-5 years full time post graduate work experience in a top tier investment bank or corporate finance advisory firm before candidates will be considered. Building your career towards private equity can take a little while.
